Also known as Special Care Dentistry, special needs care is a section of pediatric dentistry focused on the oral health of children and adults with medical, physical or psychiatric disabilities.
Persons requiring special needs dentistry form a diverse group. These patients may be found living at home, in a hospital setting, or in residential or nursing homes. Their special needs may be a direct result of their impairment or disability or due to some portion of their medical history that is affecting their oral health. Social, environmental or cultural issues may also affect their oral health.
Right from birth, special needs often touch the oral cavity. Your child’s relationship with a knowledgeable pediatric dentist may begin with feeding issues, changes in oral structures, and preparing you and your child for developmental changes coming down the road.
A pediatric dentist is trained beyond dental school in caring for children and adults with special healthcare needs. Our office has cared for many children just like yours. Our pediatric dentists are affiliated with such hospitals as Children’s Hospital of Boston, Tufts New England Medical Center, Franciscan’s Hospital for Children in Brighton and the Massachusetts Hospital School. They also have established relationships with pediatricians and other child specialists in the area, which creates a network of health professionals dedicated to your child’s well being.
It will be important to bring your child’s medical and dental history, articles about your child’s condition (if rare or mixed), and the list of their current medications to their first visit in our office. Our office is handicapped accessible, with all rooms on one level.
